shown and a pollster for bill clinton and joining us live remote from beautiful west palm beach florida, packdel. and a former pollster for president jimmy carter who is hanging out with the rich and beautiful people. so i'm going to go last, pat, just because of that. >> okay. >> doug, look. there's a lame duck session before the fiscal cliff hits. it's really brief. there's a bunch of holidays. can a grand bargain really be hammered out? >> i hope so. bottom line, we need one. the decline in the stock market last week said that the markets and the financial communities are not going to be tolerant if we don't get a grand market. bottom line, i think the republicans have to cave in on of and be willing to increase revenue, even increase rates, pivot the conversation to entitlement reform and spending cuts, but bottom line the president has them over a barrel. >> john, i think they will kick it down the road. an interim deal that simply post bones all of the elements of the fiscal cliff for three months. and gym baker of two admissions pointed that out. >> that's possible. that's the ha
're finished. it's almost ma could cabremacab. >> we have talked about bill clinton as a super surrogate for barack obama. mike, the guy in that ad, he's a super anti-surrogate, an anti-validater of mitt romney. he looks like the voter that barack obama needed to change sides, that former reagan democrat, that white working class guy looking dead into the camera and saying this guy destroyed us. he took away our livelihood and he made us build the stage that we had to stand on to announce the end of our jobs. it was absolutely the most devastating ad, but what was also remarkable as the romney people had no response. look, they had a six-month lead time on this line of attack because, remember, something called winning our future pac? they ran a 27 minute ad of this same message. romney because he survived in florida after that, he seemed to think i can get over this because he didn't respond. >> i talked to -- >> jane mayer, you write in your piece that sarah palin of all people thought that the bain ad had a negative impact on mitt romney's candidacy. she thinks it worked. here she is
on the table. have real entitlement reform. on taxes it's as bill clinton said. it's simple math. spending is at 24% of gdp. taxes are at about 15% of gdp right now. even the most conservative member of congress only proposes to bring spending down to say 20% or even 19% of gdp. you still have a 4% to 5% gap. that represents hundreds of billions of dollars that has to be made up. even if you assume growth could get back to 3%, that won't make up the gap. so taxes have to be on the table. there's no way to get around that if you want to actually deal with the fiscal crisis that we have. and what is most heartening to me is to learn today that the president is willing to take this show on the road, to go out into the states and make the case and actually reinforce that mandate he has and make republicans realize that those that want to work with him will be rewarded as people who are trying to solve people, those that want to obstruct will pay a political praice that they will feel at election time. >> his opening act has got to be rick ross. these haters are not going to hold me back. some
to the other. no one party can control the outcome of our collective deliberations. as bill clinton might say, it's just arithmetic. >> john boehner is making his bid for speaker of the house official in eye letter sent to his colleagues he says his priorities are taking on the president and democrats in the senate. he calls house republicans the last line of defense. mitch mcconnell is already thinking about 2014. the day after the election he held a fund-raiser for 1,000 bucks a person you could attend the reception. and here's a great perk about being first lady. michelle obama didn't want to wait until january to watch the third season of "downton abbey" so it sent dvds to the white house. the three of us are -- with hands on hips, where's ours? where's ours? >> if you read only one thing this morning, today's must read is courtesy of the national constitution center, which argues in a fascinating article why the petraeus affair has nothing on the nation's first sex scandal, hint, it included a duel and it's up on our facebook page alt facebook/jansingco. borm the naturally sweet monk fru
cain says he knows just the man to do it. mccain says former president bill clinton should get involved. when he was president, mr. clinton held negotiations at camp david between israel and the palestinian authority. here's what mccain had to say about it on cbs' "face the nation." >> try to find someone, even as high-ranking, frankly, as former president bill clinton. to go and be the negotiator. i know he'd hate me for saying that but we need a person of enormous prestige and influence to have these parties sit down together. >> all right. the latest recount in florida shows congressman allen west trailing his democratic challenger patrick murphy by nearly 2,000 votes. west, a tea party favorite, is trying to keep this seat representing florida's 18th congressional district. unofficial numbers posted on sunday evening on the florida secretary of state's website give murphy an edge, 166,257 to 164,353 for west. >>> all right. 2016 is a long way away, but florida senator marco rubio sure looked like a presidential candidate during a visit to iowa. rubio appeared saturday night at a big
representation of president bill clinton and jack abramoff, also john edwards. we also know the kelley family has hired judy smith. that's a crisis manager, that has previously worked with monica lewinsky. so if that gives you an idea of who the kelley family now has representing them, it could say a lot about what may be contained in those 20,000 to 30,000 documents. >> so, i should mention. it's 20,000 to 30,000 pages of documents, which is still a lot. but i think that's a critical detail to clarify. and when you talked about judy smith, of course, judy smith, the tv show "scandal" is based on what she does. she's a crisis manager. so they've hired now, the real-life judy smith to help -- >> one of the top in the business. >> that's amazing. jason ranning with our affiliate bay nine news outside the kelley home in tampa, florida. thank you, jason. we appreciate the update. >>> ahead this morning we'll talk to a man whose political career was brought down by a sex scandal of his own. former new jersey governor jim mcgreevey will chat with us. [ female announcer ] today, jason is here to volunte
with this impression of former president bill clinton. >> i want to thank bono for stepping away from the microphone, i knew he couldn't rhyme, but i'm so glad he can fall back on adding and subtracting. it might be the one thing all of us can agree on. >> the voice is spot on. bono was speaking at clinton's alma mater georgetown university saying clinton is more of a rock star than he'll ever be. let's go back out to al with a check of your weather. >> that is a darn good imitation. bono, who knew. tell us about this shoe box. >> this is actually operation shoe box. well, this week is collection week and we're going to need all of your guys' help. >> we'll put something on our website. one of our camera guys was just working on this, weren't you, tommy? >> they all get sent out to kids all around the country, all around the world, really, and they get christmas gifts and the knowledge of church and what makes life a real gift. >> you guys are focusing on hurricane sandy too, right? we really appreciate that. let's check your weather. maybe i should have tommy hogan do the weather too. news channel 7,
hired abe lowell as an attorney, who used to represent president bill clinton, john edwards and jack abramoff. judy smith has also been hired by jill kelley. she's a crisis manager. and you may remember smith from her crisis management representation of mon ica lewinsky. heavy hitters to represent the family as this family is expecting a barrage of media questions in the next days to weeks as this scandal unfolds. carol? >> wow, i'm still getting over that house. that's something else. jason lanning, bay news 9. thank you so much. paula broadwell's biography of general david petraeus is one hot seller. no kidding. it climbed out of the cellar to the 111th spot on the best seller list. nothing like a besex scandal to promote a book, something she did not mention on her book tour. >> when i realized the opportunity i had to tell this message to present this portrait of military leadership, i'm not in love with david petraeus, but he is a great role model, values oriented, speaks the truth to power. >> you think this is the weirdest twist, you would be wrong. yes, there is word this mor
the bush tax rates for everyone except top income earners. such a bill passed the senate but is stuck in the house. if no such bill passes by end of the year, in january all the income tax rates will go back up to the clinton tax rates. so if republicans in the house succeed in preventing anything from happening this time, something will actually happen, and everyone's tax rates will go up. joining me, justin reuben and ezra klein. ezra, i want to start with you on something. justin was in the room with the president today, i am going to torture him in a second to get what the president said. we have what's being treated as breaking news tonight by some of the newspapers that the president's tax revenue target in going forward is 1.6 trillion. it is something he said before when he said his opening position negotiating this is his past budget position. but what is the emphasis now on the 1.6 trillion in additional tax revenue due to where the tax discussions are going to go. >> they are looking for 1.6 trillion. but people are missing what's important about the white house position. w
. and clinton was directly involved. i can remember getting calls from him at weird hours of the night. i always wondered what he was doing up. [laughter] he would know the section of a bill and how much money was in it. and i remember one like the schip, the children's health care program. he said, can we add 10 million more which was chicken feet. he made concessions to us and we made concessions to him and we got the job done. i think i am going to act a little bit like a republican. first off, while the democrats won, i wouldn't call this a mandate. if there's a mandate, it is for the president and the congress to start working together. he doesn't talk to members of congress. democrats will tell you that. he just -- he hasn't been engaged. and the problem is not enough revenue. the problem is too much spending. now, i sound like a republican. the solution, though, is we're going to find a way to get more some revenue and the ways to do it that would still provide growth in the economy without stifling growth and we're going to have to get entitlement reform. we're going to have to control s
